This program provides a path for experienced practitioners in the health professions and other graduates to further develop their expertise and undertake research in professional settings. The Professional Doctorates take the equivalent of three years full time study, the first year being coursework (compulsory and elective subjects), and second and third year consisting of a research thesis and doctoral colloquia. A particular strength of this program is the possibility of taking up to 75 per cent of the coursework in subjects with a strong practical and/or clinical orientation. This component of the program incorporates a flexible model of individual contacts with students. Supervision is by appropriately qualified staff from the Division in which the students are enrolled.

Applicants must have completed an Australian master's degree or bachelor's degree with honours at H1 or H2A level, or approved international equivalent, plus at least three years of relevant professional experience. Applicants are also required to provide evidence of research expertise. The English language requirements are as follows: IELTS: 6.5 (minimum band score of 6.0); TOEFL(computer based): 233 (minimum score of 5 in essay writing); TOEFL(paper based): 575 (score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English); TOEFL(internet based): 88 (individual score not less than 22); La Trobe University Language centre: English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at postgraduate level.

Students must download and complete the 'postgraduate research application form'. Students must then send a copy of the application form, all supporting documentation (summary of research proposal, evidence of English language proficiency, etc.) and the A$80 non-refundable application fee to: La Trobe International, La Trobe University, Victoria 3086, Australia.
